The kanji at the upper right reads SEI HONZAN AWASE TOISHI (original mountain finishing stone).

And in the middle left edge reads SUITA

An elegant suita stone with faint touches of renge color scattered here and there. This stone is a pure pleasure to work with and leaves the blade with a classic hazy finish to the hagane and an attractive matte finish to the jigane. The stone has a very regular composition throughout right down to the back and would be an excellent stone for a professional woodworker who needs the same dependable sharpening capabilities each and every time. The back is flat and would mount easily on any stone holder. The sides of the stone are sanded with most of the saw marks smoothed out. 

You can see results of a grit test HERE the the sharpening qualities of  this stone compared to synthetic stones. This stone has a grit base of about 38,000 and with compression the grit particles will easily crush even finer.
